Day 73 – Back in Action! Hiking Resume and Rain Adventure (2026)

Back in Action: A Hiker's Tale of Resilience and Adventure

The sun rose early, signaling the start of an exciting journey. I prepared diligently, ensuring my ankle was wrapped and my backpack was ready for the trail. With a sense of anticipation, I embarked on my hike at 7:15 am, eager to regain my footing after a week-long hiatus.

My pace was deliberate, a careful dance to rebuild my confidence. The weight of my backpack and the leaden feeling in my feet were reminders of my absence from the trail. Yet, I persevered, and the mild terrain allowed me to gradually increase my speed. The Elk Wallow Wayside, a mere 3.5 miles away, marked my progress.

And then, like a scene from a hiking movie, my old hiking buddies, Blueberry Turtle and Big Stick, appeared! The rain, which had been threatening, finally arrived, adding an element of challenge to the day. We waited it out, sharing stories and laughter, until the skies cleared around 1 pm. But my left heel had other plans, reminding me of the perils of hiking.

A sore on my heel, the size of a dime, demanded attention. I bandaged it, hoping to alleviate the burning sensation. The trekking poles, left at the wayside, were retrieved in shame, and I continued my journey with newfound determination. With Big Stick, Blueberry Turtle, and Tahoe by my side, we hiked at a brisk pace, covering the remaining 6 miles to the shelter before the afternoon rains.

The shelter, bustling with familiar faces and section hikers, offered a warm haven. Despite the forecast, we opted to sleep in the shelter, with the ground floor occupied. My narrow spot above the hustle and bustle added a layer of excitement to the night. The evening was spent in camaraderie, sharing stories and meals, with the occasional question directed at the ridge runner, Mosey.

This hike was a testament to my resilience and the joy of hiking with friends. It reminded me that the trail is a place of adventure, where challenges are overcome and memories are made. As I reflect on Day 73, I am grateful for the experience and the sense of accomplishment it brought.
